Practical checklist
Bought insurance with your flight? How to prepare a claim
Start with the policy confirmation from your booking. Buying insurance does not establish that a particular delay or cancellation is covered. This checklist helps you prepare; it does not assess your insurance plan.
Who handles the claim?
Find the insurer, plan, policy number, insured travelers and dates in the confirmation. The booking site may be the seller rather than the claims administrator. Use the contact or portal in your policy; ask the seller for a copy if it is missing.
Which benefit should I check?
For extra meals or lodging while waiting, read travel-delay terms. For an abandoned trip or unused prepaid bookings, ask about cancellation or interruption terms. A cancelled flight followed by rebooking does not automatically qualify as trip cancellation.
What should I prepare?
Check covered reasons, waiting periods, limits, exclusions and deadlines. Keep the itinerary, written airline explanation, payment evidence, receipts and refunds. Ask whether to notify the administrator while missing documents are pending.
Where do I file and follow up?
File directly with the named administrator. Keep your confirmation and claim number, then respond to document requests. If you also have card benefits, disclose both sources of coverage and ask about coordination.
