From disruption to documentation

Prepare your claim, one step at a time.

Get the airline’s written explanation, then file through your benefit administrator or insurer. Use this guide without entering personal details.

Step 1

Get proof from the airline

  1. Ask at the service desk or through the airline’s official app or website. Look for customer relations, contact us, or a delay/cancellation verification form.
  2. Request the specific cause and timing in writing. Keep the original notification and rebooking messages too; a cancellation notice may not explain the cause.
  3. If no letter is available, keep the request reference and messages, then ask your administrator which alternative evidence it accepts. Don’t guess what caused the disruption.

1. Choose the verification request

Open Contact American. Select “Trip insurance verification,” then “Verify flight cancel/delay.” Follow the “here” link to the request form.

2. Complete the airline’s own form

Select the topic again if requested. Enter your contact and trip details on the airline site, review the request and submit it yourself. Keep the acknowledgement and any reference number. Use the letter template below if you need to explain the evidence requested.

Copy an airline letter request
Subject: Request for written flight delay / cancellation confirmation

Hello, please provide written confirmation for flight [flight number] on [travel date], from [origin] to [destination], booking reference [reference].

Please include the specific reason for the delay or cancellation, the scheduled and actual or revised departure/arrival times, and any rebooking, vouchers, refunds or other assistance provided. If the cause is still under review, please confirm that rather than assigning an unconfirmed reason.

I need this documentation for a travel benefit / insurance claim. Thank you.

Fill in the placeholders in your own message. BenefitMyTrip does not send it or collect your booking reference.

Step 2

Prepare your documents and file

Which protection are you checking?

Your card benefit

Match your exact card and the guide that applied on your travel date. Check the covered cause, delay threshold, fare payment, travelers, exclusions, notice deadline and document deadline.

Use the claim website or contact listed in that guide. Our detailed assessment shows the claim link and deadlines when a reviewed rule applies; a quick reference alone does not confirm your eligibility.

Check my card and trip

Gather your evidence

Checkmarks last for this page visit. Keep documents yourself; upload them only through the administrator’s official process.

Submit, then keep track

  1. Open the appropriate claim type in the official portal. Describe what happened and list each expense, amount and any reimbursement already received.
  2. Provide the requested evidence, review the information and submit directly to the administrator.
  3. Save the claim number, submission confirmation, document copies and follow-up deadlines. Use that portal to check status and respond to additional requests.
  4. If denied, read the stated reason and ask about review or appeal options and their deadlines. Supply relevant missing evidence; approval is not guaranteed.

Which situation sounds like yours?

Examples to help locate the right policy section, not eligibility results.

My flight was delayed and I paid for a hotel

Check travel-delay coverage in your card guide or purchased policy. The cause, waiting period, eligible expenses and other conditions still matter. Keep the hotel folio and written airline explanation.

My flight was cancelled, but I travelled on a later flight

Check the resulting delay and additional expenses. A cancelled flight does not automatically turn the loss into a trip-cancellation claim. Preserve both itineraries and the cause.

I cancelled or abandoned the trip and lost prepaid bookings

Ask about trip-cancellation or interruption terms, including the covered reason and non-refundable loss after refunds or credits. Our card checker does not assess these benefits.

The airline paid for some expenses, and I also bought insurance

Record the assistance by expense. Disclose the card benefit and insurance to each administrator and ask how their coordination terms apply. A remaining balance is not automatically covered.

I bought insurance but don’t know who provides it

Look for a separate policy email or certificate from checkout. Ask the airline or booking site to identify the policy and claims contact if you cannot find it. Confirm coverage directly before relying on it.

General US travel-claim guidance reviewed September 13, 2026. Your applicable guide or policy and the administrator’s requirements control. No new insurance coverage is inferred by choosing a path.
