Overnight flight delay: what to do before booking a hotel
Ask the airline about lodging and rebooking first. Then check your card’s applicable trip-delay guide before assuming an overnight hotel expense will be reimbursed.
1. Find out what the airline will provide
Ask about the next available flight, meal assistance and lodging. Save the response, including any voucher or reimbursement. BenefitMyTrip does not determine what an airline owes you.
2. Check the overnight condition for your exact card
Do not treat “overnight” as a universal qualifying rule. Open your card guide and check timing, covered cause, fare payment, travelers and remaining trip conditions. An overnight stay may be an alternative in some guides; other guides require a delay beyond a specified number of hours.
3. Record why the delay happened
Request a written airline statement showing the cause and duration. If the airline has only said “operational reasons,” keep that message and ask for the underlying cause. Do not infer equipment failure or weather.
4. Keep a record of additional expenses
Save the hotel folio and itemized receipts, together with your itinerary and fare-payment evidence. Record other assistance. A guide limit is not permission to spend that amount, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
What if I abandon the trip?
An abandoned trip, replacement airfare or unused prepaid hotel booking needs a separate review. Our checker evaluates delay expenses and flags an abandoned or uncertain journey for administrator review.
